A chilling account of WWII for one family

Although the story is bookended by some happy events, the bulk of the book is about one family's experience during WWII. It's a chilling account as it brings home what happened to anyone who the Nazi Party targetted - in some ways more chilling than the wider picture because you see the impact on individuals.
