The cult-classic by Stanislaw Lem that spawned the movie is now available for your Kindle! Until now the only English edition was a 1970 version, which was translated from French and which Lem himself described as a "poor translation." This wonderful new English translation (by Bill Johnston) of Lem's classic Solaris is a must-have for fans of Lem's classic novel.

Telling of humanity's encounter with an alien intelligence on the planet Solaris, the 1961 novel is a cult classic, exploring the ultimate futility of attempting to communicate with extra-terrestrial life.

When Kris Kelvin arrives at the planet Solaris to study the ocean that covers its surface, he finds a painful, hitherto unconscious memory embodied in the living physical likeness of a long-dead lover. Others examining the planet, Kelvin learns, are plagued with their own repressed and newly corporeal memories. The Solaris ocean may be a massive brain that …

I didn't realize that this was funny before

I read the older English translation decades ago, and I only remember the basics of the plot. This feels like a well-written book, so I'm inclined to think that it's a better translation.

But this second reading also comes after I've spent time in academia, and even engaged in the study of human consciousness. I wonder how many people understand that this is a biting satire in addition to an exploration of loss and what it means to be human? I didn't before, but I do now.

Classic Sci-Fi Doomer Book

I'm not sure if I'd have enjoyed the book as much if I wasn't a doomer that likes science. Its really good though, its a bit abstract in its ideas, which allows for me the reader to project myself more onto the book and enjoy what its saying while sort of holding a mirror to my own thinking.

Solaris

Great book, full of weirdness and creative ideas. Not what I expected at all. -1 star because there is a slightly racist passage in the beginning that threw me off. It's an old book though, I think these comments were quite common at the time. Otherwisee great and in some passages the descriptios are quite trippy.

Review of 'Solaris' on 'Goodreads'
