She has been missing for five years. And neither her body nor the secret documents she was carrying have ever been found. Now post-war England's economic recovery depends on finding her and getting the papers back. But he two young working undercover for the British ministry know only that her name and the only photo of her is in the hands of her rich American cousin. It isn’t long before they find themselves plunged into more danger than they ever could have imagined—a danger that could put an abrupt end to their business… and their lives.
Entertaining, but appalling stereotyping even by 1920s standards. All the minor villains are almost comically unoriginal, a bunch of foreign communists with low brows, small eyes and harsh accents. The main characters are more sympathetic, but only slightly more interesting, especially in the first half of the book. But points added back on for the locked room mystery, I really liked that.
According to some of the book reviews I read on GoodReads, this was Agatha Christie's second novel.
And it shows.
I tried reading the first chapters and couldn't continue. The characters weren't that interesting, the banter between them tedious, and I just didn't want to continue.
So this book earns a formal "No Review" from me because it wasn't fair for me to review a book that I hadn't finished reading.
Perhaps you'll enjoy it more than I did.
