Seriously wow. Good job on a new series. I totally love our protagonist, Ann Beckett. The first scene in the book involves 2 cats stuck in a culvert, and Ann, one of the town's librarians, running out into the rain to save them. It really sets the scene for us. This is a woman who is real, who isn't worried about her appearance, and who really cares about other people. As the book goes on, we learn other things about her - some hurts and baggage from her past, and what her life is like as a single, mid-thirties reference librarian in a small town.
