My father-in-law gave me this book for Christmas, and I really enjoyed it. It was a bit syrupy in places, but you'd expect that from a son writing about his father.
I missed half of the senior Bush's presidency living overseas, in a third-world country, largely insulated from world news, US news, or even local news, so a lot of information was new to me. I also gained a lot of appreciation for the US presidency and for public servants in general--it was a good counterbalance to the cynicism I've grown to feel.
When remarking on Operation Desert Storm, Bush takes a weird diversion into the war he waged with Iraq, justifying and explaining his actions. The discussion seemed out of place in a book otherwise devoted to his father's life and presidency. I could have done without that.
In all, though, it's an extremely readable narration of the life …
