Beautiful, intelligent, and hopelessly addicted to luxury, Lily Bart is the heroine of this Wharton masterpiece. But it is her very taste and moral sensibility that render her unfit for survival in this world.

Review of 'House of Mirth' on 'Goodreads'

4 stars

A melancholy and thought-provoking story of a lady having trouble with a early 1900s society that refuses to give her both of the things she wants at once. The Lily Bart is vain and intelligent, but her problem is her indecision. It can get a little infuriating as she flipflops between her contradictory goals of freedom and luxury, but the conclusion is quite noteworthy. They say this book is a classic, and I can see why.
