Emilia Drakon was once the youngest and kindest of the dragon sorcerers, but she's now the last of her kind. Betrayed and angry, she trades her meekness for a sword and embarks on a quest for vengeance that will lead her straight into the arms of the legendary Captain Maria Welles.

Captain of the famed pirate ship, the Wicked Fate, Maria is every bit as treacherous and bloodthirsty as they say. She has her own vendetta and practically jumps at the chance to trick Emilia into joining her crew.

But when their animosity toward each other blossoms into a passionate romance, the two women will have to decide what they want most.

Vengeance?

Or love?

The L-word at sea?

By which I mean: otherwise smart and interesting people making dumb choices for the drama of it all.

3½⭐️

Things I liked:

  • Lindsey Dorcus does a fantastic job narrating
  • Yay for gender-inclusive, interesting crew — the gayborhood of it all
  • The last 20% of the book
  • The magic system

Parts which didn’t really land with me:

  • Lots of characters making poor life choices for little or no reason
  • Power dynamics BS (as always: inscrutible, hot, kinky bosses do not hold my interest)
  • Ridiculously naive heroine

Overall slightly positive, and I’d still read a sequel.

narrator made it fun

3 stars

The pacing of the book was incredibly unbalanced. With 20% left in the audiobook, my partner and I agreed that the story hadn’t moved forward enough yet for the remaining time to allow for a satisfying wrap-up.

The amount of detail and repetitiveness in the first 80% of the book stands in glaring contrast to the ending, which contains several major plot points (what happens to Catherine, the whole trial, how much time passed, they’re alone on the island?) that were totally glossed over.

2 stars + 1 for the narrator making it fun to listen
