Seemingly random events simultaneously occurring around the world are in fact connected as part of a radical group's plan to destroy modern civilization--a plan that will eliminate America's top government personnel, leaving the nation no choice but to implement its emergency contingency program ... Directive 51.

I don't read a lot of fiction because in order for it to be worth it to me it has to be plausible and compelling with as little BS as possible (think Arthur C Clarke). Directive 51 was a random library find for me and it met all my needs. It made me think about many topics I otherwise wouldn't have and wound them together in a decent story. I gather it is the first in a series of books, but I can't speak to those. The only thing that kept me from giving it 4 stars was the seemingly out of place minor love story awkwardly stuffed into the middle. Other than that... I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I find it interesting that I'm reading "destruction of American government" books at a time like this.

The last 20 pages were a perfect, intellectual thriller ending. Perhaps they should be required reading for the 113th United States Congress.
