This is book number two in the Long Earth series, a tale about parallel universes that can be accessed by 'stepping' sideways.


This series has grown on me more and more as I've read it. It is more than just a story about parallel universes; it is a story about what it means to be human, with Artificial Intelligences based on former living humans, regular people, and creatures so similar to humans, and yet so different. In fact, it is a story about more than just what it means to be human, it is a story about what it means to be sapient. It covers issues from how we affect our environment, to what we consider to be sapient life that deserves the same rights as humans, to how much control an AI should assume over others.
