The plot is built on a trio: Tsugami, his lover Sakiko and a business partner Tashiro. In post-Second World War Japan, Tsugami, the editor-in-chief of a newspaper, pushed by Tashiro, sets out to organise a bullfight. The project starts drowning in logistical issues, while Tsugami's relationship with Sakiko is also going under. Alone and focussed, Tsugami persisits in his bullfight plan, in a desperate and existential struggle, but the end goal itself is meaningless.--
When I initially tried to read this book, I was a bit skeptical that I could read a book about a bull fight. It turned out be more than that, of course.
she felt something that was neither love nor hatred, but a sense of how truly lost he would be without her. It was a pure feeling, far removed from desire.
