It was entertaining, but set your expectations accordingly

This was a re-read. The first time I read this novel, I was a bit disappointed. I was looking for something more serious in tone, but instead got a novel that was very self-aware and trying to border on comedy.
However, I wanted to re-read the book now that I'm in the head space for it. This is a fairly standard transmigration story that doesn't take itself too seriously. The main character finds himself within the very web novel series he hates (loves?), where he is one of the villains that gets brutally murdered in the source material. So his goal is to rewrite the story by becoming an ally to the novel's protagonist.
There's a lot of setup in this first entry. The future love interest starts out as a boy, so this is definitely a slow burn. Overall, it was entertaining the second time around, but …
