Cetaganda

One of the qualities that I love about the Vorkosigan series is that because it is so long, it allows Bujold to play with different genres between books. If The Vor Game is military SF, then Cetaganda is a mystery novel. Pedantically, this book is not really a mystery proper in the way that a reader could piece together the whodunit independently; however I think this is an example of "detective Miles" mode, and one that we'll see again in Memory and Komarr especially.

This book features Miles and Ivan on a diplomatic visit to Cetaganda for the funeral of the Cetagandan empress. Miles has to juggle investigating a plot that's trying to frame the Barrayarans (but why? and by whom?), hiding things from his superiors (by implying he's a higher level spy), trying to interface with the Cetaganda police about a murder investigation (while not giving things away to them or to his superiors), and stopping a plot that would cause chaos to Cetaganda (while also trying to work towards Barrayaran interests).

One thing I think this novel does well is to portray the Cetagandans in a sympathetic and interesting light, and to dig into the interesting social structure they have going on. In previous novels, the Cetagandans have been the historical invaders of Barrayar and also aggressive expansionists into the Hegen Hub, and the reader doesn't know much about them other than their military bent. This book could be a bit more subtle about weaving all this background info in without as much of an info dump, but in a broader sense it adds a lot of nuance and fills in a lot of detail.

Ok, ok. I know I'm leaning on the horn here (pun not intended), but holy moly this book is still stuck in horny Miles brain mode. He is still not over Elena (who doesn't even appear in this novel) and he loses it over the haut women who ensconce themselves behind opaque bubble forcefields. There is one brief, minor moment where Miles realizes these feelings are clouding his judgement; Ivan comes up with a plan Miles hasn't considered because it wouldn't let him play the hero in front of haut Rian. This is as far as it goes, though.

(It's funny how much this quality sticks out for me on this reread. Am I just older and ace-er? Is this how books airquotes of the time all were and I haven't noticed because I haven't been reading books that are thirty five years old? Is this a deliberate writing decision for a twenty year old protagonist? Did I just forget that's how these books were?)

Vaya por delante que califiqué a esta novela con 5 estrellas (como casi todas las de Miles pese a que es posible que se trate de la novela más política de la saga ( todas tienen parte política, pero aquí es la principal) y también la más enrevesada y por tanto, -creo- que la más liosa o difícil de seguir.

El motivo principal es porque nos encontramos de lleno en Cetaganda, adversario político y militar de Barrayar y la descripción de su(s) cultura(s) y forma de vida/motivaciones se nos hacen muy extrañas tanto a Miles como a nosotres como lectores; ya que Bujold en este caso, aunque deja muy claras la influencias de la Tierra en Cetaganda, la hace la sociedad más extraña a nuestros ojos y se permite ir un paso más allá, haciendo que sea la sociedad más extraña de todo su universo (o la más evolucionada y por tanto más alejada de nosotros como humanos). Y eso se nota mucho en esta novela.

Como digo, nos encontramos en la aventura más política, pero también en la que si leemos entre líneas nos da mucho de las claves de la personalidad de Miles: El no poder estarse quieto, el uso del pensamiento lateral y deductivo, el querer saber la Verdad por encima de todo y el sentido de Justicia; que si bien ya hemos ido viendo en las aventuras anteriores aquí queda muy patente.

¿Y de qué trata? Bueno, en esta ocasión Miles e Iván viajan hasta Cetaganda para asistir como representantes de Barrayar en el funeral de la difunta emperatriz. Lo que debería haber sido una misión diplomática, pronto se ve empañado por un suceso al que nadie parece haber dado importancia salvo Miles; el aparente suicidio de uno de los sirvientes de la difunta emperatriz.

Dans cette histoire, Miles est envoyé avec son cousin Ivan chez les Cetagandans pour assister à un enterrement. Simplement parce qu'ils sont Barrayarans, ils vont se retrouver plongés dans un complot visant à modifier profondément l'équilibre des pouvoirs au sein de l'empire Cetagandan, ennemi de longue date de Barrayar.
Il y a beaucoup de finesse dans ce complot interne Cetagandan. Et beaucoup de finesse aussi dans la façon que Miles va être obligé d'utiliser pour démêler les noeuds de cette intrigue et innocenter Barrayar. Mais bon, au bout du cinquième ou sixième tome des aventures du gnome, je commence à savoir que l'auteur est particulièrement à l'aise avec des intrigues alambiquées (et celle-là l'est particulièrement).
En fait, je trouve que l'intérêt de ce tome est ailleurs. En effet, pour l'instant, on a surtout vu Miles se balader sur Barrayar, ou dans des stations spatiales. Et ce roman le met aux prises avec un empire cherchant sciemment à s'éloigner de l'humanité, de toutes les manières possibles. C'est le cas des Ghems, mais c'est surtout le cas des Hauts, qui semblent tous être parfaits.
Heureusement pour Miles le contrefait, la perfection physique n'est qu'une façade dans ce cas. Et du coup, tous ces Hauts si prétentieux redeviennent plus humains.
Et d'un seul coup, tout ce complexe échafaudage ne redevient qu'un banal complot pour devenir calife à la place du calife, ce que Miles voit très bien d'ailleurs. Et heureusement, car ça nous permet de démystifier un peu cette civilisation prétendument supérieure.
Et du coup, ce roman perd ses flamboyants habits pour n'être qu'une simple enquête policière (certes dans un milieu incroyablement fastueux). Ce qui ne m'empêche pas de le recommander à tous les fans de Miles.
