Tumblr had me believing it would be a lot more heartbreaking than it was. I loved the book, devoured it in under 4 days (not easy with a baby around), but I didn't get heavily attached to anyone enough to make me cry if they died.

But I gotta appreciate a slow-burn romance and political intrigue, they're tough to do well. It was good. Looking forward to reading the next one.

Hot off the heels of Traitor, library pulled up my loan early.

I read it for a class and hated it at the time. Now it is probably my favourite novel, in the most disturbing way.

I wasn't the target age demographic for this, but enjoyed it nonetheless. It feels like Eleanor's story told through the lens of a high school romance. It's a bit melodramatic, as you would expect (teenaged me would have loved it), but as an adult and a parent it was a reminder of the emotions and actions teenagers experience when in a difficult and unsafe situation.

Maia's story is an excellent exploration of gender exploration, the lengthy self-discovery process, and the challenges (and satisfaction!) that comes from trying to be accepted for your authentic self. The book contains many references to other great reading materials, and I've already pulled out tons of quotes when discussing these topics.

Highly recommend this book, whether you feel it relates to you, people you know and love, or just the world around you.

If you like books where you don't get all the answers, that aren't necessarily linear, and are more about prose and gut-wrenching heartache, you'll enjoy this book. It's art. If you don't like artsy books, you probably should pick something else to read.
