Reading is my favourite thing to do. Scifi and fantasy are my favourite genres, but I also like mysteries, biographies, true crime, and a smattering of historical fiction.

reviewed Lethal white by J.K. Rowling (A Cormoran Strike novel -- book 4)

J.K. Rowling: Lethal white (2018, Mulholland Books)

"When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike's office to ask …

Better Than Career of Evil

As with any writer, Rowling's skill at writing mysteries has improved with each book. I was also interested in the minor character of Della Wynne who is blind. However, I was disappointed by Rowling's portrayal of her. Although she was painted as a successful and well-respected politician, when Strike visited fer at home, she made him pour her wine and bring it into the sitting area. Blind people can pour their own drinks and carry them wherever they like. Later, she knocked over her wine, made Strike clean up the stain, and pour her another glass, which she almost spilled again. I can't tell you the last time that I as a totally blind person spilled a drink. Not that I'm perfect or anything, but I think Rowling made her look inept at taking care of herself. She could have done much better with this character.

Joe Abercrombie: A Little Hatred (The Age of Madness) (Hardcover, 2019, Orbit)

I just couldn't get into this book. I don't know why. I might come back to it at another time. I did purchase it from Audible, and I'd hate to waste money like that.

Isaac Asimov: The Caves of Steel (1997, Granada)

"A Del Rey book."

It was bad enough when Lije Baley, a simple plainclothes …

First Asimov Book

This is the first Asimov book I've ever read. I liked it, and I may read more in this series, but reading an older scifi novel reminded me of how they are set in the present day just as much as in an imaginary future. Just look at the way women are treated and expected to act all throughout the book.

J.K. Rowling: The Silkworm (Cormoran Strike, #2) (2014)

When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At …

Not a mystery writer

Robert Galbraith, aka J.K. Rowling, is very good at character and world building, but she's not on par with the likes of Michael Connelly, David Baldacci, or Peter Robinson. Her fantasy fiction books were much better.
