Kate Elliott's other series haven't quite done it for me so far, but I re-read these years after the series finished and greatly enjoyed them. If you want an alternate history version of medieval Europe with magic and a major twist in power-player civilizations, check this out. It lagged around Child of Flame, which was where I originally fell off of reading these as they came out, but picked up again after I got over that hump. Massive trigger warning for rape and other kinds of abuse, though. I could have done without some of it, especially the misery porn that happens to one supporting character around the middle of the series. It's something that wasn't uncommon in big 1990s adult-marketed fantasy series, though, and I kind of remembered it getting like that sometimes before starting my reread.
