Most people from Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula believed the source of the Mayan culture’s revered blue dye was long gone. The iconic dye resembled that of the nearby Caribbean Sea and was used to paint pottery, sculptures, jewelry and more. But Luis May Ku, a ceramist in Mexico, retraced his Mayan roots to recreate the pre-Hispanic pigment for the first time in more than two centuries. Read more from @AlJazeera

21 Indigenous Chontal inhabitants of El Coyul, whose community has organized since 1972 to defend their territory on the coast of Oaxaca, have been sentenced to 15 years in prison and ordered to pay 55 million pesos in damages for crimes that never occurred. Instead they are being targeted so developers can displace the community and take advantage of the beachfront location.

George Lucas got the idea for Princess Leia's iconic "space buns" from Mexican revolutionary women. Specifically Clara de la Rocha, a total badass.

Clara's descendant recounted:

"She crossed a river on horseback…and was able to take out a power station in order to allow the rebel forces to attack during night without being seen."

Activist and human rights defender Daniel Bautista Vásquez was found dead nine days after disappearing in the state of Oaxaca. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights previously granted him protection measures after he received threats for denouncing police torture. The state is saying he was hit by a car. Human rights group and his family say he was extrajudicially executed.
