I love figures like this... it's from Bar-On et al 2018 and it shows the distribution of global biomass.

We animals are so obsessed with the animals, but just LOOK at how important plants are. And we may be dismayed that there's now a larger biomass of livestock than people or wild mammals, but there's a greater mass of worms than all three together.

🛰️🌍 Hi Fediverse!

I work in & I'm now for ideas on how to continue my work on an exciting trend analysis (side project), for which my institute lacks dedicated funding.

There's of course 'apply to national & EU grants', 'work on weekends', and 'student supervision': all on my list.

Any good suggestions/ideas in addition to these? Any success with ?

Reboosts very much appreciated 🙂!

"Microsoft and OpenAI are reportedly working on a massive datacenter to house an AI-focused supercomputer featuring millions of GPUs. The Information reports that the project could cost "in excess of $115 billion" and that the supercomputer, currently dubbed "Stargate" inside OpenAI, would be U.S.-based."

So much could be done with that amount of money... such a huge waste.

I hate that both sides are like “Look we're protecting you" RE: banning TikTok…

No you aren’t. The problem isn't TikTok

The problem is tech companies feeling like they have exclusive, inalienable right to every scrap of data about their users, including tracking us across platforms. Tracking what we like, who we communicate with, etc. and then doing what they like with it, including selling it to other tech companies.

We need user privacy and data protection across the board!

Avast fined $16.5 million for ‘privacy’ software that actually sold users’ browsing data

"This allowed it to collect data on religious beliefs, health concerns, political views, locations, and financial status. The company then stored this information “indefinitely” and sold it to over 100 third parties without the knowledge of customers, the complaint says."

@pluralistic writing for @goodlawproject on why the question of NHS data is not one between Palantir & non-use, but between an approach based on profit (and data exploitation) and an already proven system (headed up by Ben Goldacre) that offers real security for patients' data.

The real Q. is how much has Palantir paid decision-makers to get on the inside track?
