In 2021, hundreds of citizen scientists walked a distance of 600 km, counting up and classifying all of the outdoor lights they could see while they did it. The results of their observations have just been published in the journal Nature Cities: https://www.nature.com/articles/s44284-025-00239-5
Find out why they did it, and what they found out in this thread đ
i started wondering whether uv lamps (like blacklights) might be useful to dry dishes washed with unfiltered water here. our main danger in unfiltered water is angiostrongylus cantonensis (the cause of "rat lung worm", or angiostrongyliasis).
i searched "uv light for angiostrongylus" and got this excellent open access article from PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases - a journal that i used to be editorial manager of đ :https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6772140/
it's a very nice literature review on the effects of uv light on various helminths that negatively affect human health.
the article included the following info: "Similarly, larvae of the nematode A. cantonensis exposed for 15 minutes to UV-A light were unable to develop inside an animal host."
blacklights are UV-A and i am now considering treating washed dishes with the blacklight in addition to air-drying them for a minimum 24 hours (which i already do).

i am very happy to have found this info, thankful to the scientists who did the research, and thankful to everyone who makes open access work. it feels pretty neat to have been a small contributing part of this incredibly complex knowledge production line, and to now be a beneficiary of the open knowledge that was produced.
working at PLOS wasn't always a picnic, but the scientists i worked with were amazing people with integrity, who genuinely cared about the research and the people impacted by the subjects they were researching. i feel proud to have facilitated the publication and sharing of their research findings to anyone - without subscriptions!
So... I am considering eventually making my older books available for free to the general public, but I don't want to do that on the #InternetArchive because I don't want it to be mistaken for pirated works (which are rife over there).
Are there any #OpenAccess platforms suitable for submitting works on #folklore ?

// foss.events is not just about software-related events. Open Science, Open Data, Open Access, Open Hardware, Open Educational Resources and many other related movements are just as important as FOSS is.
Let's add these events to // foss.events and start connecting!

I fear the already fraught conversations about shadow libraries will take a turn for the worse now that itâs overlapping with the incredibly fraught conversations about AI training.

#Agroforestry is on the rise in Germany, but its adoption is facing many legal & other hurdles. Here, we use a social-ecological traps perspective to explain how a complex legislation interacting with local processes disincentivizes farmers to implement agroforestry. Now out in "Sustainability Science" (#OpenAccess). A wonderful collaboration with Marina Klimke and Cathrin Zengerling. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11625-024-01623-1
