It's good to see that the Caine Prize for African Writing shortlist includes two stories from the collection 'Africa Risen' which I read last month and highly recommend. A collection of thirty-two stories from writers across Africa and the African diaspora, it includes an interesting range of types of stories and has a number of really top-notch ones.

A story is an escape. Not an escape from life, but an escape from what keeps us from living it. Not an evasion, but a better way through.

A story is a way to tunnel beneath the bars. To dig away the dirt. Bit by bit by bit. It is patience, resistance, resilience, resolve. A chisel. A pick. A hammer. Split stone and debris. A slow and steady crawl, until finally we're free...
