Florence Cathedral, formally the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, is the cathedral of Florence, Italy. It was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style to a design of Arnolfo di Cambio and was structurally completed by 1436.

The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink, bordered by white, and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris. The cathedral complex, in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. These three buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the historic center of Florence and are a major tourist attraction of Tuscany. The basilica is one of Italy's largest churches, and until the development of new structural materials in the modern era, the dome was the largest in the world. Since I am now trying to learn #Italian, my compulsive habit of picking up any travel books I find on public bookshelves might actually pay off - since a fair amount of these are about #Italy .

Still not sure where in Italy I should go for future vacations - apart from #Venice, of course, which I want to research for a future book I plan to write. I'll probably start with the northern parts of the country, since I'll need to travel by train from northern Germany...

Yay, my new large-format printer has arrived, it's set up, and it's beautiful!
Naturally, yesterday the price was lowered by 350€.

Photograph of a quintessential historic Tuscan street scene, under a sliver of a late-afternoon blue sky. The scene featuring a renaissance-era building with yellow walls—large hewn stones edging the doors and windows—now used as an indoor-outdoor restaurant. Ten or eleven stone steps lead past an illuminated menu, up to a narrow outdoor terrace, with elegant white-clothed tables shaded by wide cream-colored umbrellas. There are many flowering potted plants (in whites, yellows, reds and magentas), creeping vines, and squash, pumpkins and gourds picturesquely lining both sides of the stairs. A leaning bike at the bottom—edging the street’s large cobblestones—is also filled with green plants. Decorative wrought iron grills, with scroll-work designs, adorn a window and the top of the door frame, and warmly lit hanging lanterns are suspended from more curved iron, at the edge of the terrace.
