My latest blog post: GNU Terry Pratchett

https://mikecoats.com/x-clacks-overhead/

In honour of the impact he's had on my life, I’ve joined the ranks of similarly nerdy sysadmins and enabled the x-clacks-overhead header on all my sites. GNU Terry Pratchett.

After finishing the second book 8yo now got interested in the old adventure game. And that's all nice, but if you ever played that game you might remember how beastly some of those puzzles were.

But also: I still KNOW all this stuff from back when I was a kid.

Once again.
I'm huge fan. I re-read/listen everything from once a year. So when it was time to decide a graduation work subject back in studies.. I didn't need to think long.

So here's my big Discworld . All is there, 'tuin and the .
Mostly made by but the sea is melted plastic.
I did take some freedom with elephants.

This is the only one left of four Discworld pieces I've made, that I have permission to sell.

finished reading The Colour of Magic to my 8yo (in German). He would be totally ready to continue with The Light Phantastic right away, but 10pm is a bit late for that.

Bit of a pity I gave away my German version of Mort back in the day, although it's gonna be weeks until that becomes relevant.

As soon as the 40 years of Discworld design was unveiled last year, I immediately thought "Slap that on a pin badge and take my money!". I'd all but given up hope, but out of the blue, they released them the other day! *happy trinket-goblin noises*

Terry Pratchett interview in Adventurer 11 (June/July 1987)

Adventurer was a rather short running UK RPG magazine. In the last issue, Adventurer 11, June/July 1987, there was an interesting interview with Terry Pratchett, where he recounted his experiences with D&D (he used to play and early Discworld has at least some influences from that) and why he stopped.

My favorite part is this one:

I gained marvellous insight into human nature one day when I introduced the concept of D&D to six ladies who worked in the tele-ads department of a local newspaper for which I was working-They cottoned on to the idea fairly quickly, so I gave them a little scenario which I’d been round backwards and forwards and upside down. They got one central idea torture everyone you meet and grab everything you can. It was a beautiful scenario. There were goodies, baddies, people on …

“You can't believe in the Great A'Tuin," he said. "Great A'Tuin exists. There's no point in believing in things that exist."
