A general warning to the community: There is a new type of active on , and I have reason to believe that they are active on as well.

These scammers pretend that they are famous authors, and claim that they want to "assist you on your writing journey". Which is odd - why would "famous authors" want to start a new account just to help other authors, instead of their own works?

No doubt this approach is intended to get you to spend lots of money on some "consulting service" which will get you "additional sales and reviews". So be aware, and be deeply suspicious of anyone contacting you out of the blue who pretends to be a famous author.

As I have mentioned before, I believe that commercial platforms are a dire threat to the long-term survival of human civilization (see also: , ), and thus (barring any better alternatives) the needs to grow and replace them.

But there are a bunch of use cases for social media which aren't covered by assorted Fediverse applications yet. Here are the ones I could think of:

1. A "job networking" site, similar to . Most of us live in a situation where we have to work for a living, and hunting for prospective job opportunities and business connections is useful. This is where we can post our CVs and talk about our field of business.

2. A "Question and Answer" site, similar to . Having some way of people publicly asking questions that can be publicly …

"Friendship books" were the of the 17th and 18th centuries (without the ads and data mining). Here's a fine example of one begun in 1795 by the aunt of the poet Felicia Dorothea Browne: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/the-friendship-book-of-anne-wagner-1795-1834

PSA: Meta (Facebook) is offering a new “feature” where it asks you if you want to opt into “cloud processing”. If you say yes, you’ll be giving it permission to upload your entire camera roll and use AI on them to make suggested posts.

I’m just spitballing here, but I’m pretty sure most of y’all would not want to give Facebook all of your photos to use with their AI.

ORG's new report exposes Meta’s intrusive profiling of its users.

With the introduction of Generative AI to Meta’s ad tools, existing problems with opacity will get worse.

I admin a local singles group on Facebook, and this is something I've learnt..

Maybe it's not that you're having trouble finding the right woman. Maybe you are the wrong man. For everyone.

For the love of everything good and holy, go the fuck to therapy.
