Different vampire lore

I'm not into vampire stories, but I like V. E. Schwab's writing and the cast for this audiobook is exquisite as well, so here we are. Pretty much the first half of the book was 'just' following two of the main characters, with a strong focus on one. It made me assume that the book is just a collection of loosely connected stories that meander through the book and I was missing a defined storyline. Until that appeared suddenly in the story of main character three. Finally, there was a conflict and a struggle for resolution. Actual action, even. The contrast between the two halves of the book was pretty stark and somewhat irritating.
Overall, I enjoyed this audiobook, but it could have had more action sooner.
