Dans ce premier tome de "la plus belle décalogie de la fantasy" (dixit la quatrième de couverture), on découvre le jeune Garion, appelé à un grand destin, sa tante Polgara (qui n'est pas que cuisinière) et tout un tas d'autres personnages plus spectaculaires les uns que les autres.
Bon, j'avais lu ces bouquins il y a ... pfiou, quinze ans, peut-être ? Et j'en gardais le souvenir d'une lecture agréable, mais sans réelle profondeur.
Quinze ans plus tard, peu de choses ont changé. Garion commence toujours sa vie comme une espèce d'[b:assassin royal] avant de prendre rapidement (dès qu'il quitte la ferme de son enfance) une autre direction qu'il ignore, mais qu'on imagine sans aucun mal. Et si j'applaudis des deux mains la façon formidable dont les personnages sont campés (Belgarath, Silk, Barak, ... enfin, tous, en fait) je regrette parfois que l'auteur ne prenne jamais la peine de nous …

Et si j'applaudis des deux mains la façon formidable dont les personnages sont campés (Belgarath, Silk, Barak, ... enfin, tous, en fait) je regrette parfois que l'auteur ne prenne jamais la peine de nous dire ce qu'il y a dans les têtes pensantes (au hasard, Belgarath ou Silk, qui aurait pu fournir un contrepoint ironique parfait à l'innocence placide de Garion) pour se consacrer exclusivement à ce jeune paysan pas trop dégrossi.
C'est en tout cas une parfaite lecture estivale.
