One of the first English detective novels, this mystery involves the disappearance of a valuable diamond, originally stolen from a Hindu idol, given to a young woman on her eighteenth birthday, and then stolen again. A classic of 19th-century literature.

Well, that was a long and convoluted tale, redolent with the racisms of not so long ago, and instructive as well. A romance of character and manner?
For some reason I had thought this was a short work, but once I settled in to the prospect of a longer read in period prose, I was quite caught up. It's a classic of sorts, and I look forward to reading more by this author.
