Very enjoyable murder mystery set in 12th century Cambridge during the rule of Henry II. Children are disappearing, and the general population blames the Jews that live in Cambridge. As King Henry needs their money, he sends for outside aid from Salerno which comes in the form of a Jewish investigator, a Saracen servant and the real star of the show, Adelia, a female doctor from the University of Salerno who is specializing in autopsy.
Yeah, I know, super-unbelievable for 12th century. Here you have this confident woman in a profession she must hide at all times, or she might be burned as a witch, and I don't know, it felt odd.
That does not change however that the story was good, the killer was a surprise, and I really had a great time reading this book, despite the oddly tacked on attempts at a love story. Sorry, Adelia is …
