The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender.

Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it. It was the fate of Horza, the Changer, and his motley crew of unpredictable mercenaries, human and machine, actually to find it, and with it their own destruction.

I don't know why I was under the impression that this was a super important part of the sci fi cannon. It had some interesting imagery in it, but it was pretty silly action movie sequences for the large part. I am curious how the culture grows in the other books though, there were enough of these written that some in them must have stuck.

I'm not sure why I can't get into science fiction that is set in space. Maybe I'm reading the wrong books. Maybe it's because I have a hard time caring for made up alien races and planets. It's similar with high fantasy. I much prefer urban fantasy and I prefer my science fiction to be set on earth. However, I really like the idea behind the series Iain M. Banks wrote and I thought I should give Consider Phlebas a shot. It did not go so well. While I thought the prose is interesting, the plot itself put me to sleep. I did not care for the main character either. I've read good things about the universe Banks created though and I wonder if I should tip my toe into the second book, just to see if that one is more up my alley.
